Helen is a chartered engineer, with a Master’s degree in Environmental Management. A fellow of the Institution of Civil Engineers, and the PWI she was named in the Telegraph’s top 50 most influential women in Engineering in 2016, and the Cranfield top 100 women to watch in 2017.
Her 25+ year career in infrastructure has included roles in consultancy, contracting, regulation and owner operator. Since graduating, Helen has retained close links with academia, having served as Industry Advisor for Plymouth and Cardiff Universities, and University College London.
Helen joined Network Rail in January 2017, and now runs an Engineering function of around 600 staff, but provides engineering leadership for all engineers across the Infrastructure Projects team at Network Rail; around 1,600 engineers in total, delivering £100m worth of new and renewed infrastructure every week.
Former roles include Managing Director of CH2MHill’s £70m European Water Business, and Director of Engineering for United Utilities, the water and wastewater service provider, for 7m customers in the North West of England.
At United Utilities, Helen led the design and assurance team delivering a 5 year, £3bn capital programme, and was also the architect of a new technical authority for the company, spanning design, construction, operations, maintenance and decommissioning
