Blane is a Chartered Engineer and fellow of several institutions, with significant experience in utilities and the built environment. He runs his own consultancy firm BLTK Consulting Ltd. Blane is a former director and now member of the World Plumbing Council where he continues to promote public health and sanitation globally in conjunction with the World Health Organisation. During his time as chief executive of the Chartered Institute of Plumbing and Heating Engineering, Blane frequently appeared on national radio during flooding situations advising consumers on public health matters. He is currently a non executive director on the Estate Wide Engineering Infrastructure Resilience project board helping to drive a sustainable future for UK Parliamentary buildings. Blane chairs the IET Built Environment thought leadership group and is the part time chief executive of the Institution of Railway Signal Engineers. He is a visiting teaching fellow at Aston University, lecturing on Masters programmes in construction and the built environment.
