Institution of Civil Engineers
Hugh Ferguson is a professional civil engineer who has worked as a contractor, consulting engineer, journalist, editor, publisher, director and writer.
Hugh graduated with a civil engineering degree from University College London and worked for contractors and consultants, before joining New Civil Engineer magazine. He was Editor (later, Editor-in-Chief) of NCE from 1976 to 1990, during which time he established the British Construction Industry Awards.
In 1991 he set up the Institution of Civil Engineers’ commercial company, now Thomas Telford Ltd, and was appointed as its first Managing Director. He established the One Great George Street Conference Centre, and was responsible for book and journal publishing under the Thomas Telford Publishing and ICE Publishing brands. He was later also appointed as Deputy Director General of the Institution.
Since leaving the Institution he has concentrated on writing magazine articles and books: he is author or co-author of The Civil Engineers (2011), Engineers (2012), The Contractors (2013) and Constructionarium (2016).
He is a Fellow of the Institution of Civil Engineers and a Member of the Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation.
