chief executive officer,
Steve is Chief Executive of BAM Nuttall Ltd, a leading civil engineering contractor delivering a wide range of infrastructure projects across the UK, and a prominent member of the Dutch based Royal BAM Group of Companies. As a leading member of a European Group of companies Steve is able to facilitate the sharing of knowledge and best practice in construction across northern European countries.
Steve has spent all of his working career in contracting and is now entering his 26th year with BAM Nuttall. He has a wide range of experience on construction projects from roads to sewage works and bridges to tunnels. Prior to joining what was formerly known as Edmund Nuttall Ltd, he worked for two smaller UK contractors. Before this he studied Civil Engineering at the University of Leeds, graduating in 1983.
Steve is a firm believer in companies investing in people and developing their abilities at all levels. He actively promotes a wide variety of routes into civil engineering and has personally overseen a substantial increase in BAM Nuttall’s investment in BTec/HND block intake. This route provides school leavers with a clear career path in the industry. He is also a keen advocate of direct employment and self-delivery with the workforce, where his company continues to make a considerable investment in training and development. He has taken a keen interest within the company on understanding the challenges and reasons for the low numbers of women who move into senior positions and is developing a number of initiatives to attempt to counter this.
In addition Steve is actively involved in assisting Infrastructure UK in their construction costs reduction exercise for the UK government.
Steve has been awarded a CBE for services to Civil Engineering & Construction in the 2015 New Year’s Honours list.
