The design solution is a clever response to the site restrictions and we could see evidence of how Kier embraced positive engagement and collaboration with E8, the concept/original designer, to make sure they captured and delivered on the original intent. It was clear that Graham Potts, the project lead for Kier, gave the project leadership, momentum and openness to achieve what was a seriously difficult and challenging build. "This was an exceptional project which delivered across the full range of criteria that the judges considered. From the outset it was clear that this team had a vision to deliver something that would exceed the quality of other buildings in the university – delivering an all-electric building which has been assessed as BREEAM Outstanding, that now sets the standard for other similar projects. The panel noted the design optimisation which led to materials savings (and better environmental outcomes) the data model which was used throughout and drove construction sequencing and the energy model. As a net zero carbon building in operation, the team had an excellent understanding of the trade-offs that had to be made to achieve this together with embodied carbon targets. The collaboration across the delivery team was clear from the outset as was the benefit that was gained from engaging early with the Contractor and professional team. The panel noted the accessibility built into the design, another area where this project can set the standard for similar buildings, and the focus on delivering social value to the community. We liked the mention of the active travel strategy for this building with EV charging and an increase in cycling provision. The panel felt this team should also be commended for their integrity in explaining their GI challenges at the beginning of construction."

"We were inspired by the solution which improved accessibility for all users, safety through deconflicting bus manoeuvres and security for the public through better visibility across the station. Topography and the position of the bus station as a gateway to the town was further enhanced through the design providing a 5th elevation of a green roof, benefiting from using rainwater run off as well as PV panels. All of this was achieved whilst keeping bus operations going during the build as well as sympathetically incorporating 3 Grade II listed buildings."

"The judges were struck by the passion shown by the presenters, the initiative they applied in linking the supply chain from The Elephant to TBC.London, and the effort and commitment the whole design team demonstrated in delivering their goal of reusing pre 1970s structural steel. This is a vital yet under-appreciated part of the circular economy which has the potential to deliver huge carbon savings across the industry. The establishment of the Engineers Reuse Collective is a really strong outcome, and hopefully with some good publicity this can grow and continue to guide the UK construction industry into the wider reuse of existing structural steelwork."

Alice Technologies and Implenia Windworks infrastructure wind farm project

"This submission presented a challenging and very relevant construction problem – looking at the design and manufacture of large off shore wind farms. Working with ALICE, an AI tool, they optimised solutions to emerging construction challenges with clear cross organisation benefits visible. The team demonstrated an exciting potential for harnessing AI data analytics to optimize complex largescale construction project outcomes, with far reaching application. The judges also liked that the data and overall decision making was still owned and overseen by the Client."

Winner:

Tony Gee and Partners Barmouth Bridge Metallic Replacement

"An inspired, elegant temporary works solution to a complex engineering challenge. The scheme was meticulously planned and brilliantly executed, minimising environment impacts, and captivating the local community on what is clearly a beloved and vital structure to the area. A great example on how Temporary Works should minimise the construction risks to increase certainty for a solid successful outcome. The scheme truly showcases the best of the British construction industry and demonstrates the vital part civil engineering and engineers play in creating a better world for all generations.

Particularly impressive was that this was done in full view of, and causing some inconvenience to, the public for whom the bridge was culturally important, but the impression left was one of great positivity for the team and for the construction and engineering industry."

"This project captured an incredible social purpose for stakeholders and everyone across the community in which it sits. Providing homes for people recovering from homelessness, this Passive Haus urban regeneration sits in an area of high poverty and brought together the community and supply chains through extensive engagement and collaboration to achieve a remarkable outcome for the money involved.

Judges felt that for a local charity to successfully engage in placemaking at this scale while tackling such an important social challenge at the same time as doing so with sustainability and resilience at heart and the end user always in mind was truly special."

"Judges agreed this project had pushed boundaries in ways that delivered real success in every aspect of project delivery – be it stakeholder engagement, placemaking, remarkable EDI policy put into practice or decarbonisation through new practices and materials.

The project set new standards for safety. Intensive practices that included extensive training requirements for permission to access the site, resulted in no life threatening or life changing injuries throughout its 40 million person hours worked.

And most crucially, judges felt the scale and intended longevity of the environmental and social impact built upon the legacy of Bazalgette’s great sewer innovations and makes this infrastructure that over delivers, creates public realm and generates an identity. Really outstanding."

Winner:

Alice Technologies and Implenia Windworks infrastructure wind farm project

"Judges felt the outcomes of this initiative were remarkable for their potential social impact and for creating an environment for deep collaboration, enhanced design and rapid evidence of potential improvements for the local community.

Judges felt that applying AI to test and make possible a floating wind deployment facility on a quarry that has reached the end of its working life stood out for offering a new way of working and providing potential benefits by making projects viable in places where communities have suffered from the closure of extraction industries.

Along with the potential to reskill local people, This approach to testing scenarios and optimising outcomes saw planning undertaken times faster than would be typical – something judges felt was not only valuable for wider industry but especially so for a facility that the world has few of and that the UK is committed to expand as an industry of the future."
