Interactive design, healthy materials and targeted acoustic improvements have enhanced learning, communication and engagement, while the building itself is used as a tool to explore sustainability and environmental responsibility. Energy reduction of use was improved and zero landfill. The client described the impact as transformational for both the team and the children who use it, creating a creative, sustainable and highly purposeful environment for learning with clear long-term value.

Net Zero Carbon Impact Award

This category will recognise the best examples of leading the field with reducing embodied carbon through the design, or construction of new infrastructure or buildings to support the government’s target to be carbon net zero by 2050.

Winner:

Scott Whitby Studio - Church House

The entry demonstrated a clear vision and client brief, with the client giving the project team the scope to embrace new and innovative ideas. The implementation was particularly compelling, especially the use of sprayed cork on the walls, which intrigued the judges and provided a strong example of low-impact intervention. The improvements achieved to a Grade II listed building in such a sensitive and preservational way were highly impressive, and naturally raised the question of why more buildings could not be approached in a similar manner. The use of the product at scale clearly pushed boundaries, while the balance between operational and embodied carbon was handled very well. Overall, this was seen as an exemplar project with significant wider relevance, and a strong model for how similar buildings could be improved in future.

Social Value & Community Impact Award

This category recognises the best examples of generating social value and community impact - improving the lives and prospects of the communities that live close to the project area.

Winner:

Taylor Woodrow - The Plan & Pitch Project

Judges called Plan & Pitch an exceptional example of targeted social value built around the needs and potential of young people. It goes well beyond conventional careers engagement, giving participants, particularly those at risk of exclusion, genuine agency to design something delivered in their own community. The significant shift in participants considering construction careers, together with a tangible physical legacy, shows the power of early intervention. Rather than consulting young people, it empowers them as creators and decision-makers. The judges were unanimous that this was the standout submission, and see it as a benchmark for placing young people at the centre of project design and delivery.
